Application Criteria

Festival Artists

Applications for the Kinnari Music Festival’s inaugural season is now closed. Below is information for this season’s applicants for your reference. Please note that dates for the festival’s 2024 will be announced by the end of June 2023. Thank you!

The festival focuses but is not limited to orchestral instruments, and accepts musicians who play any of the instruments listed below:

STRINGS: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass |  WOODWINDS: Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Bassoon | BRASS: Horns, Trumpet, Trombone, Bass Trombone, Tuba | PERCUSSION: Snares, drum set, cymbals, glockenspiel, xylophone, triangle, wood blocks | TIMPANI | PIANO

The artists are grouped as follows:

Aspiring Artists (2-5 years experience)

Young Artists (6 years or above of experience)

All Kinnari Music Festival applicants must adhere to the following criteria to apply:

  • Be between the ages of 10-18 at the time of the Kinnari Music Festival

  • Be proficient in English

  • Be at a minimum of ABRSM Level 2 (or equivalent)

Solo Showcase Artists

Applicants for two available Solo Showcase Artist spots will showcase their talent at the community concerts. The Solo Showcases are open to all instruments. We are looking for the two artists who best exemplify passion, technical artistry, and commitment.

The Solo Showcase submission area is in the last section of the application.

Composer Showcase Artist

Applicants for the Composer Showcase Artist will have one of Thailand’s most famous composers, Mr. Panawit Kiangsiri, review their piece. The original composition of the successful applicant will be played by the entire orchestra at the community concerts.

Guidelines:

  • The composition should be no longer than six minutes.

  • The composer must include the melody, harmony and rhythm (in piano sketch or other forms). Shorthand scores with instrumentation, as well as full orchestral scores, are also acceptable.

  • The selected Composer Showcase Artist’s piece will be judged primarily on melody, harmony, rhythm and structure. Arrangement and orchestration considerations will be secondary.

The Composer Showcase submission area is in the last section of the application.

Application Key Dates

Application Deadline for Round One*: Sunday, February 12th, 2023

*Round one applicants will receive priority consideration.

Application Result Notification: Wednesday, March 1st, 2023

Application Deadline for Round Two: Friday, March 31st, 2023

Application Result Notification: Friday, April 7th

2023

Program Fee: 20,000 baht per artist for successful festival applicants. The fee includes all meals and snacks for the duration of the festival.

There is NO application fee.

Additional Information

  • All applicants will need to provide a video of their performance (between 2-5 minutes) for their application

  • All applicants are required to submit a short essay by selecting one of the following two topics:

    • Option One: What does music mean to you?

    • Option Two: Who is your favorite musical artist and why?

  • Solo Showcase Applicants are required to submit an additional performance video (between 2-5 minutes) for consideration

  • Composer Showcase Applicants are required to submit a PDF and MIDI file of their complete score for consideration

  • Tip: Please note the application is a Google form. As such, all materials (video[s], essay [as Word document or PDF file], information, etc.) should be ready before beginning the application process. We recommend completing the application in one sitting, as applicants are unable to save progress during the submission process.

  • Applicants will need to complete all required items marked with an asterisk (*) to be able to submit their application.

  • Once submitted, applicants will receive a confirmation message that their application has been successfully submitted.
